Set beside the River Eden in the heart of Cumbria's Eden Valley, Armathwaite is a peaceful sandstone village surrounded by rolling countryside, woodland and riverside scenery. With its traditional village character and access to beautiful walking routes, it offers a quieter alternative to the busier Lake District towns while remaining well placed for exploring northern Cumbria. Staying in holiday cottages in Armathwaite gives guests a relaxed countryside base between Carlisle, Penrith, the North Pennines and the Lake District.

The village sits in an attractive stretch of the Eden Valley, where quiet lanes, woodland and the River Eden create excellent opportunities for walking and enjoying the outdoors. Armathwaite also has a station on the scenic Settle to Carlisle railway, giving visitors another way to explore the surrounding landscape and neighbouring Cumbrian communities.

With traditional pubs, riverside scenery and easy access to some of Cumbria's best countryside, Armathwaite is particularly suited to romantic breaks, walking holidays and relaxed family stays. Its location makes it possible to enjoy rural peace while still being within reach of Carlisle, the Lake District and Hadrian's Wall Country.

Things to Do in Armathwaite

Walking is one of the best ways to experience Armathwaite and the surrounding Eden Valley. A popular local route explores Coombs Wood and the banks of the River Eden, combining woodland paths, quiet country roads and attractive river views. The village's sandstone bridge and riverside setting provide a picturesque starting point for shorter strolls as well as longer countryside walks.

Armathwaite railway station sits on the celebrated Settle to Carlisle line, allowing visitors to experience one of Britain's most scenic railway journeys without needing to travel far from the village. The line links Armathwaite with Carlisle to the north and destinations through the Eden Valley and Yorkshire Dales to the south, making it a useful option for car-free days out.

For history and culture, Carlisle is within easy travelling distance and offers Carlisle Castle, Carlisle Cathedral and Tullie museum and art gallery. Penrith and the northern Lake District are also accessible for days out, while the North Pennines provide open landscapes, walking routes and traditional market towns to the east.

Whether you want peaceful riverside walks, scenic rail journeys or a base for exploring northern Cumbria, Armathwaite offers an appealing rural escape. Explore North East Escapes holiday cottages in Armathwaite for easy access to the Eden Valley, Carlisle and the wider Cumbrian countryside.
