Northumberland is one of the UK's most dog-friendly destinations, with miles of empty beaches, ancient castles, rolling moorland and a warm welcome for four-legged guests everywhere you go. Whether you're planning a coastal escape near Bamburgh, an inland retreat near the Cheviot Hills, or a harbour-side break in Seahouses or Amble, we've got the best dog-friendly stays in Northumberland for you.
It's no secret that Northumberland consistently ranks among the top UK destinations for dogs and their owners, and it's easy to see why. The county boasts more castles than any other in England, over 20 miles of largely unspoiled coastline, and the vast open spaces of Northumberland National Park. Crucially, dogs are welcome almost everywhere: on the beaches, through the forest trails, in the pubs, and, as you'll see below, in some of the region's best cafes and restaurants.
Add in some of the most characterful holiday cottages in the north of England, and you have everything you need for a truly memorable trip with your dog.
At North East Escapes, we handpick our properties for quality, character, and a genuine welcome for guests, furry ones included. Here's a look at some of our favourite dog-friendly stays across the region.
It's hard to beat a stay in the shadow of Bamburgh Castle, with the vast sweep of Bamburgh Beach stretching right from the village. Dogs are welcome on this beach year-round, making it one of the finest in the country for an off-lead run with the waves.

Goes the extra mile with a dedicated dog menu featuring treats like sausages and dog-friendly "beer." A genuinely dog-first venue that sets the bar for the whole region.
Beadnell
A seaside gem, great coffee, excellent breakfasts, and a relaxed dog-friendly atmosphere that perfectly suits a morning after a breezy walk along the bay.
An ideal post-walk stop, with views of Dunstanburgh Castle ruins and a warm welcome for walkers and their dogs.
Beaches: Most of Northumberland's beaches welcome dogs year-round. Some areas, including parts of Bamburgh, Seahouses, and Alnmouth, have seasonal restrictions (typically May to September) on specific sections, so it's worth checking locally before you go. Embleton Bay and Beadnell are generally excellent for dogs throughout the year.
Walks: The Northumberland Coastal Path runs for 64 miles from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed and is one of the finest dog-walking routes in England. The Cheviot Hills offer more challenging moorland walking, while the ancient St Cuthbert's Way passes through some of the most beautiful and remote parts of the national park.
What to pack: Towels (you'll need them, Northumberland beaches are irresistible), a long lead for areas near livestock, and poo bags. Most of our properties provide dog beds and bowls, but it's always worth checking your individual property listing.
Whether you're looking for a cosy bolthole for two, a spacious farmhouse for a bigger group, or a coastal cottage with beach access right on the doorstep, we have a dog-friendly property to suit you.
