Visit Bamburgh Beach, One of England's Most Magnificent Beaches
Bamburgh Beach is consistently voted among the finest beaches in the United Kingdom, and once you arrive it is immediately clear why. A vast sweep of golden sand stretches for miles in both directions, backed by dunes and with Bamburgh Castle rising dramatically from its basalt rock above the shoreline. The Farne Islands lie offshore to the north-east, Holy Island is visible on a clear day to the north, and the Cheviot Hills form the backdrop inland. There are few beaches anywhere in England that offer this combination of unspoilt natural beauty, dramatic architecture and wide open space, and Bamburgh Beach remains gloriously uncrowded even in the height of summer.
The beach at Bamburgh stretches along the base of the dune system and the outcrop on which the castle stands, running from Seahouses in the south to Budle Bay and Waren Mill in the north, a continuous strip of sand that forms part of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Northumberland Coast Site of Special Scientific Interest. The clean waters, RNLI lifeguard service in summer and gentle gradient make it safe for swimming and ideal for families. The beach has held the prestigious Blue Flag award. The area around Bamburgh was settled in Anglo-Saxon times and the castle looming above the sands was the capital of the ancient kingdom of Northumbria.
The beach itself is the primary attraction, with the views from the sand upward to Bamburgh Castle providing some of the most photographed coastal scenery in England. Low tide exposes broad shelves of rock ideal for rockpooling, with the rock pools accessible from the northern end of the beach particularly rewarding. The dunes behind the beach are a protected habitat and pleasantly walkable. The nearby village of Bamburgh, with its castle, Grace Darling Museum, shops and pubs, provides all the facilities needed for a full day's visit. The coastal path north from Bamburgh towards Budle Bay and south towards Seahouses offers spectacular walking with the beach on one side and the dunes and fields on the other.
Bamburgh Beach is located at Bamburgh, Northumberland, NE69 7BT. There is a car park at the northern end of the beach in the village of Bamburgh, with further parking in the village centre a short walk from the sand. The beach is freely accessible at all times. RNLI lifeguards are on duty at Bamburgh Beach during summer months. Dogs are welcome on the beach year-round. The village has cafés, pubs, an ice cream parlour and Bamburgh Castle for a full day's programme.
